Expansion!

Well, considering nobody's said anything on this site for 8 days, I decided I'd start a thread about a possible MLF expansion. It appears like we have a few candidates who want into the league (which is great after starting with one 'phantom owner') so I personally think that an expansion to most likely 12 teams would make sense, especially now that we have 4 different guys who can sim games (and during the summer would be a lot easier for the simulators).

Oh and a special shoutout to the Trops fan droozer!

Also, some sites for expansion:

-Home Depot Center/Los Angeles
-Gerald J Ford Stadium/Dallas
-Spartan Stadium/San Jose
-Alumni Stadium/Boston
-BH Networks Stadium/Orlando
-Hornet Stadium/Sacramento
-PGE Park/Portland
-Carter-Finley Stadium/Raleigh
-Crew Stadium/Columbus
-Miller Park?/Milwaukee
-Rice-Eccles Stadium/Salt Lake City
-Paladin Stadium/Greenville
-Foreman Field/Norfolk
-BB&T Field/Winston-Salem

These are the markets in the Top 50 TV Markets that we or the NFL aren't in.

And Minor Minor League Football FTW.

Michael said...

Well we'll see.
But we said bmac would be the next new owner(replacement, or expansion) but personally, I'd say no to droozer. He bugged us a lot during the baseball league.

droozer said...

thanks for the shoutout :). And I know i bugged you guys alot with WLB. I guess i just got over excited. Sorry bout that

Beast Mode said...

Bradley Center in Milwaukee maybe...

Michael said...

Well I'm gonna go on a limb, and guess a team in Lincoln will happen if bmac gets a team.

Also Canton would be an optionb

sizemorematters said...

Yeah, both good points.

And Bradley Center? We're not the MAFL

:D

Beast Mode said...

It's better than Miller Park.

Beast Mode said...

Or maybe Ohio Stadium in Columbus? :P

sizemorematters said...

Yeah, like we're drawing 100,000+ a game.

:P

Michael said...

Zane, really? Last time I checked, football fields were 120 yards total, thus not fitting in the Bradley center.

TC said...

You have to remember that he is also the one who suggested the track at his local fairgrounds be added to the SARL.

Beast Mode said...

And that most likely wouldn't fit in Miller Park either.

Michael said...

Zane, shut it. You're just trying to cover up what you said. Plus it's online. So we can't tell.

Miller Park has 345 fences in both corners, so it would fit. The thing is, there's larger markets with football stadiums that would be a better fit.

I think Expansion is a good idea, and Bmac already has a spot, droozer will be a good canidate for the next one as well, cause he was just trying to help out with the WBL. I think that any expansion team we get should play in a College stadium unless its a pro stadium that is used for Conference Championships.

Personally I think Lincoln woud be a good place for a football team because the people in Nebraska are crazy about the Huskers and they have a huge stadium. LA would be my other choice for the west. As for the East, I'm not too sure, I wouldnt mind another team down south though, maybe Mississippi, or Florida.

Also I will try to get Week 4's last game done this weekend. Then we will see were we can go from there.

Kevin said...

We could bring a team to Tampa, with the fictional rebuilding of a bigger, better Big Sombrero.

Beast Mode said...

Some places that I think would be good:
Tulsa, OK
Orlando, FL
Lincoln, NE
Los Angeles, CA
Portland, OR
Richmond, VA
Salt Lake City, UT
Knoxville, TN

Just some ideas. Also, I'd like to have another West team in the North. Currently there's only Boise and the other 4 are in the South.

sizemorematters said...

Where else would we put a team? SLC and Portland are the only two viable options here and I have a feeling that if Bmac puts his team in Lincoln, we could see an interesting scenario. Suppose droozer gets the 12th team and puts them in say, Orlando. Here's my divisional alignment idea:

West
Hawai'i
Boise
Albuquerque
Las Vegas

South
San Antonio
Orlando
Memphis
Alabama

North
Connecticut
Quebec
Lincoln
Louisville

You'd play your division twice for 6 games, and then you'd play half of the other divisions once for 4 more games.

droozer said...

Well if I get a team, I might put it somewhere in Virginia, depending on where bmac goes. Charlottesville would also be a good place, with Scott Stadium. I'm also looking at the West, because Nebraska could be classified either way. Just a thought

BJBerthiaume said...

sizemore: how would playoffs work with 3 divisions though?

Michael said...

^^^ It could be like the top 6 teams league wise.

But the ASG could be a problem.

And I'm worried about the player list.

Big Mike said...

3 Divisions is out of the picture. We only need to use 2 Conferences with 6 teams and then the playoff picture looks like this..

Wild Card
3 vs. 2

Conf. Champ
2/3 vs. 1

It would be like the West playoff picture last season, Boise and Hawaii's Week 10 game was basically the Wild Card.

As for the Expansion teams, Bmac will get the 1st choice, so he would get to choose whether he wants to be in the west or east. The next owner will have to choose a city in the opposite conference, like I said before I think the East needs another Southern team since it would balance out the East, Virginia would be okay although I'd prefer a team in Florida. Also Mykl, we will have enough players...

Michael said...

Well on that list, i doubt we have enough players at the position we were didn't have any. We'd still have to look a little.

Beast Mode said...

Three words: Madden Free Agency.
That place is loaded with people that would fit this league (Better than Mario Manningham and Karlos Dansby anyway)

sizemorematters said...

Oh, and the playoffs could work like baseball's.

I just personally hate the idea of playing no cross-conference games. I guess this works:

West
Pacific
Boise
Hawai'i
Las Vegas
Mountain
Albuquerque
Nebraska
San Antonio
East
Central
Alabama
Louisville
Memphis
Atlantic
Connecticut
Quebec
Virginia

My thoughts. You'd play your division twice, the other teams in your conference once, and alternate between the other conference's divisions each year.

Beast Mode said...

WEST

Pacific
Boise
Hawaii
Las Vegas

Central
Albuquerque
San Antonio
Lincoln

EAST

North
Connecticut
Quebec
Louisville

South
Memphis
Alabama
Richmond

sizemorematters said...

Why would you put Richmond in the South and Louisville in the North?

Richmond is substantially closer to QC and CON than Louisville and Louisville is substantially closer to MEM and ALA than Richmond. It makes no sense what-so-ever.

Beast Mode said...

Hmmmm... after looking at a map, you're right.

droozer said...

Well as a Virginian, I see Richmond as the South, atleast more than Nebraska. Especially because they were the capital of the south. But you shouldn't worry about it too much. I might not get a team or bmac might choose the east

Beast Mode said...

Lousiville's in Kentucky, droozer.

droozer said...

I know. What I'm sayin is Richmond should be in the south

Michael said...

Guys. 6 in each league. Leave it.

Beast Mode said...

OK. My playoff idea:

Round 1
East 2 vs. East 3
West 2 vs. East 3

Round 2
East Round 1 Winner vs. East 1
West Round 1 Winner vs. West 1

And then the title game.

Thoughts?

Big Mike said...

12 games a season.....2 against each division opponent, 2 Out of Conf. games.

Then the playoffs would be the example I showed. If we have 4 people simming who can do it most of the time then we shouldn't have a problem.

Beast Mode said...

I like your/my idea.

Big Mike said...

Well considering I already said thats what I wanted the playoffs to look like 10 comments above yours, I thought you saw it already. Plus, you put 3 East teams in the Wild Card, I know it was a typo but it was kind of confusing at first. Also the majority of our players are from the Madden Free Agents, and the ratings from this years is crap. Karlos Dansby is preety good too, hes on your team and he/aaron rodgers made the play let the Cardinals advance one more round.

Big Mike said...

This was the gif I ment to post

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b

1/Gifs/ChipperJones.gif

It is intended at the 3 Division idea.

sizemorematters said...

my only issue with this idea is we can't get a 10 game season done in a timely matter... just sayin'

Big Mike said...

Well there is a couple reasons for that, 1) We really only have 2 simmers right now, and I have had to sim the majority of the games. 2) It's the school year, so I have homework and I like to hang out with my friends on the weekends....if the next season can have 12 teams then we can manage 12 games, we just have to have more people simming.

droozer said...

Well, I am planning on gettin an xbox soon, so if I get a team I might be able to sim

sizemorematters said...

Honestly, I think this league needs to head down the road of just having one season a year and making it 12 or even 16 games during the spring/summer.

That's my two cents though.

Unknown said...

A couple of things.

Firstly, I'd like to throw my name in as an expansion candidate, behind bmac and droozer. The only caveat is that my bid would be for Philadelphia, though I'd intend to put the team at Franklin Field in order to keep with the Minor League motif. I've been watching the MiLF with some interest, and would like to come aboard when you guys are ready.

Secondly, though you guys aren't going to want to hear this, I think the three-divison format probably works best for the length of season that you're doing -- home-and-home in division (6 games) and four out of division games, top six make the playoffs. You can always divide the "Central" division for the All-Star Game. It's not that serious.

The only way I can see you going with two divisions is if you expand to sixteen games (5 x 2 in division for ten games + 6 x 1 out of division for six games = sixteen games). For the playoffs, an idea would be to adopt the CFL's crossover rule, whereas if the fourth placed team in one division has a better record than the third place team in the other, then that fourth place team qualifies as the third-seed from the other division. You open up the playoff race that way and you avoid a 5-11 team making the playoffs.

Just some suggestions.

Thank you!

TC said...

My idea!

Let's finish this season first.

BJBerthiaume said...

^ I agree

sizemorematters said...

Yeah, this is true.

Of course, one of the reasons we seemingly can't finish it is when we're playing it. I've got basketball practice pretty much every night on top of homework... that's why the spring/summer works a lot better.

Beast Mode said...

Brian, I think that Harrisburg, PA would be a better pick. Just my 2 cents. And Mike, I actually propsed that to Mykl before this season. And yeah, the East thing was a typo.

Big Mike said...

Well my whole point was that you shouldn't have re-posted what I already put, theres no point into saying the same thing twice. Brian I think you would be a great canidate for our league, and you have layed out a preety good idea. I think that would work and it would be good for the East to have 4 teams in the playoffs :P. But we do need to wait to figure all of this out until the season is over, until then we will just take applicants for Expansion.

Unknown said...

I understand, fellas, but at the same time, the topic was brought up, which is why I posted here. Y'see. ^_^

Beasty, I don't live in Harrisburg, and Harrisburg doesn't have a suitable stadium even by minor league standards. If the commissioner is suggesting L.A., Dallas, and Boston, then surely a team in Philadelphia wouldn't be such a bad thing.

I'm okay with waiting until after the season to discuss expansion possibilities, but like I said, I didn't bring it up -- you guys did. I figured I'd post my interest before I got too far behind.

Big Mike said...

Oh I didn't intend that at you Brian, I was mostly trying to say that we need to wait to discuss playoff/season format at the end of the season, but I'm fine with people who are not in the league to throw their name in the mix and give any suggestions they have. Philadelphia would be okay with me as long as it is at Franklin Field.

sizemorematters said...

I brought it up for the simple fact that we haven't played a game in well over 2 weeks now.

Plus, I'm not the commish :P

TC said...

Uhhh, so the whole "no team can play in the same city as an NFL team" has been thrown out the window? Philly?

sizemorematters said...

I am not opposed to placing teams in NFL cities, if the overall goal is to make this just a spring/summer thing (which it needs to be IMO)

TC said...

Question: How would having a team in Philadelphia help this be a spring/summer league?

Big Mike said...

TC he hasn't even been announced as a owner yet, we will have to decide that after the season, so cool it.

Big Mike said...

Oh and Sizemore I announced a long time ago that this would be the last Winter season we ever do, and that we will only do 1 in the Spring/Summer from now on. I think I said that after the "pre" season week 1 fail. Although I wanted to go ahead and finish this season.

TC said...

Cool what? I just asked a damn question, to clarify the seemingly nonsensical post made by sizemore.

Beast Mode said...

Or once, I agree with TC. And I didn't see your post Mike.

sizemorematters said...

How is it nonsensical? I said that if the goal is to make this a spring/summer league that I wouldn't be opposed to having teams in NFL cities.

And alright, I missed that somewhere Mike.

Unknown said...

TC -- Like I said, I really don't have any attachment to any other geographical region in the world, with the exception being the Norfolk / VA Beach area (which is where my fiance is from). I might consider that area instead should I eventually join the league.

Until then, I don't see the big idea of wanting to put a team in my hometown, especially if the team isn't going to be at the Linc. Franklin Field in the spring is an awesome place for a game, be it football, lacrosse, or soccer.

I'd be happy to, if needed / wanted / loved / whatever, help out with the organizational aspects of the league -- schedule, standings, that sort of bit. I mean, you guys can run the league -- I don't want to take that bit away from y'all -- but I specialize in setting all of that stuff up, as I'm sure you can see from my extensive background over on the Creamer boards.

TC said...

"Seemingly nonsensical" when I read it it sounded like you were saying that because we would have teams in NFL cities that it would make it easier to have a spring/summer league. Thanks for clearing that up.

About time we get a team in New Jersey. Rutgers Stadium (Rutgers Univ. -- Piscataway/New Brunswick, NJ) or Princeton Stadium (Princeton Univ. -- Princeton, NJ) seems like good home stadiums for them.

As for the 2nd expansion team, I would go with either Nebraska (Lincoln) or Oklahoma (Tulsa).

So this is how a 12-team MLF would look like.

WEST
Pacific
*Boise
*Hawaii
*Las Vegas

Central
*Albuquerque
*Nebraska OR Oklahoma
*San Antonio

EAST
Southeast
*Alabama
*Louisville
*Memphis

Northeast
*Connecticut
*New Jersey
*Quebec
